Freaking about Feedback

By | September 5th, 2019|Uncategorized|

Feedback comes in many forms, a nod, a grade, a tweet, a furrowed brow, silence, thumbs up, surveys, empty chairs, evaluation forms, referrals, glowing testimonials. Much of it is constructive, positive and even glowing. So why do we fear feedback? Both giving and receiving feedback can be met with trepidation and anxiousness.  Perhaps an experience of poorly delivered feedback left you feeling disempowered and now you brace yourself when you see feedback coming your way. Are you reluctant to give feedback because you anticipate others having similar ambivalence and want to spare them the discomfort?  Why do we fear [...]

Empathy is Ubiquitous

By | September 8th, 2016|Blog Challenge, Emotional Intelligence, Future, Leadership|

reWrite the World Blog Challenge Day 20 I imagine a world in which empathy is ubiquitous so that... Emotions are met with openness, curiosity and compassion. Concerns and misgivings are aired and dealt with in an openhearted manner. Edge dwellers are accepted for their eccentricity without judgement or social isolation. Today we judge before seeking to understand. Many of our emotions go unexpressed and are associated with shame and fear. Our emotionally phobic culture validates our tendency to squelch our emotions and perpetuates social isolation, enforcing a rigid scope of 'normalcy'.  Our frayed social fabric is marked by disconnection. [...]

We feel Safe to Express our Whole Selves

By | September 2nd, 2016|Blog Challenge, Emotional Intelligence, Future, Leadership, Self-Awareness|

ReWrite the World Blog Challenge Day 14 I imagine a world in which we feel safe to express our whole selves. So that... Emotions are ok to express, valued, learned from and moved through rapidly. Our silly side is welcomed and seen as appropriate in more circumstances. Creativity is unleashed in every aspect of life. Our current work culture is about bringing our professional selves to work at the expense of the rest of ourselves. This means our creativity, fun, and emotions are often put aside in favour of technical expertise. When we go outside the narrow band of acceptable expression our sanity is questioned. If we’re too happy we must be on drugs. [...]

Wisdom is Integral to Leadership

By | August 26th, 2016|Blog Challenge, Emotional Intelligence, Future, Leadership|

ReWriting the World Blog Challenge Day 7 I imagine a world in which wisdom is integral to leadership. So that the decisions we make consider long-range implications, and come from a place of experience, knowledge and good judgement. If we made decisions with a broader range of our intelligences, not just our mental cognition, wise choices would be the natural result. When wisdom informs our acts of leadership, we open ourselves to dramatically different outcomes, ones that preserve the experience of the past while we forge our way into the future.   Today, short-term gain seems to be the foundation of many of the decisions [...]

Vulnerability is Embraced as a Strength

By | August 25th, 2016|Blog Challenge, Emotional Intelligence, Future, Leadership, Self-Awareness|

ReWriting the World Blog Challenge Day 6 I imagine a world in which Vulnerability is embraced as a strength So that we can ask for help without shame. So that showing emotion is recognised as an important human trait that is normal and natural. So that those who express emotion are respected and revered. So that raising a new idea is met with encouragement and curiosity. So that putting yourself out there as an artist, entrepreneur or free thinker isn’t so scary. Currently, our society regards vulnerability as a weakness. This makes asking for help, posing new ideas, and creative expression seem difficult and scary things to do. This prevents [...]

Peace Begins at Home

By | August 21st, 2016|Blog Challenge, Future, Leadership|

ReWrite the World Blog Challenge Day 2 I imagine a world in which peace begins at home. So that conflict resolution is a common occurrence, diffusing and preventing violence and the emotional scars that remain. So that families address conflict before it causes damage to hearts, minds and bodies. So that healthy discussion enables differences of opinion to co-exist as a matter of course. So that nation states focus on peaceful resolution of differences and unmet expectations.   Today,  35% of women globally, experience physical and/or sexual violence, primarily by their intimate partners. Children learn to deal with frustration and conflict using violence. It starts in [...]

Will jobs be lost or changed?  – Future of Work: Part One

By | April 29th, 2016|News|

After being on the Comms team at the Future of Work Conference this year I came home with pages of notes. I've committed to writing at least three blog posts to share my insights and how they relate to my work, (and possibly yours). Here is the first one. The fear about job loss is both founded and unfounded. Perhaps we could look at it in a different way and see something different in this issue. The are predictions about job losses and large successful companies being disrupted, it sounds like a recipe for economic and social chaos. When [...]
